Summary

A simple yet revolutionary approach to improving your body’s oxygen use, increasing your health, weight loss, and sports performance—whether you’re a recovering couch potato or an Ironman triathlon champion。 With a foreword by New York Times bestselling author Dr。 Joseph Mercola。

Achieve more with less effort: The secret to weight loss, fitness, and wellness lies in the most basic and most overlooked function of your body—how you breathe。 One of the biggest obstacles to better health and fitness is a rarely identified problem: chronic over-breathing。 We often take many more breaths than we need—without realizing it—contributing to poor health and fitness, including a host of disorders, from anxiety and asthma to insomnia and heart problems。

In The Oxygen Advantage, the man who has trained over 5,000 people—including Olympic and professional athletes—in reduced breathing exercises now shares his scientifically validated techniques to help you breathe more efficiently。 Patrick McKeown teaches you the fundamental relationship between oxygen and the body, then gets you started with a Body Oxygen Level Test (BOLT) to determine how efficiently your body uses oxygen。 He then shows you how to increase your BOLT score by using light breathing exercises and learning how to simulate high altitude training, a technique used by Navy SEALs and professional athletes to help increase endurance, weight loss, and vital red blood cells to dramatically improve cardio-fitness。

Following his program, even the most out-of-shape person (including those with chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma) can climb stairs, run for a bus, or play soccer without gasping for air, and everyone can achieve:

Easy weight loss and weight maintenance Improved sleep and energy Increased concentration Reduced breathlessness during exercise Heightened athletic performance Improved cardiovascular health Elimination of asthmatic symptoms, and more。
With The Oxygen Advantage, you can look better, feel better, and do more—it’s as easy as breathing。

Absolutely fascinating。 Patrick McKeown's book makes a lot of sense, and I am going to try his techniques in the hope that it will help me improve my efforts to run。 Absolutely fascinating。 Patrick McKeown's book makes a lot of sense, and I am going to try his techniques in the hope that it will help me improve my efforts to run。 。。。more

How grateful I am that I am naturally a nose breather but am also looking forward to improving my breathing and implementing it into my athletics and meditation。 I recommend you pick this up, learn what is taught, and teach your children early how to breath correctly。

Wow。 Very interesting。 Got a bit repetitive towards the end, but actually very helpful。 I typically gasp and wheeze for air while running, but by simply switching from mouth breathing to nose breathing, my morning jogs are much more pleasant and my heart rate is lower。 Uncertain about the other benefits claimed, but the improvement I’ve seen in workouts has motivated me to keep going with the suggested techniques。

Very interesting - it will make you think about how to improve your health through breathing exercises。

Great book。 Improved not only my breathing also my wakefulness。 I sleep better and since I only breath less through the mouth I am less tired。 It sounds crazy I know。 But since this book I sleep with a tape on my mouth。 And sleep better than ever! Recommendation to everyone。 Changes not only breath patterns during day, night, exercise。 Changes the whole life!

Changed my life。

I read Breathe before this and it both books talk about humans sort of don’t breath correctly or most efficiently。 This books talks more about fitness and techniques to increase your BHT (breathe hold time)。 I did not like the part when he was talking about mental illnesses, like anxiety, and sort of judging people who take pills to help。 I think this had some helpful information, but personally I liked Breathe better。

Pedro Javier

Expone las técnicas que él utiliza en su clínica y aporta planes de entrenamiento que van muy bien si quieres implementar una respiración mejor

A real eye opener into the world of healthy breathing。 Knowledge that everyone should have access to。 Not just a why to book but also provides the instruction on how to。 I would recommend to everyone who wants to improve their health。

Very interesting concept。 The reason for the three stars is that I felt some of the examples used in the book were made up。

horribly unstructured and repetitive but also interesting and helpful

An okay addition to other books that I've read on this subject。 I like the emphasis on athletes and the prescribed exercises。 Patrick is clearly passionate about his subject。 However, this could have beenshorter。 Tends to read more like a sales pitch for his program toward the end。 Valuable info, but could have been communicated more efficiently。 An okay addition to other books that I've read on this subject。 I like the emphasis on athletes and the prescribed exercises。 Patrick is clearly passionate about his subject。 However, this could have beenshorter。 Tends to read more like a sales pitch for his program toward the end。 Valuable info, but could have been communicated more efficiently。 。。。more

A very powerful and useful insight into better training and performance for athletes。 Really clever and useful techniques for the reader and could be useful for everyone。 I've already noticed a few people around the office who exhibit deep sighs and other upper chest breathing symptoms。 This will go on my favorites list for those reasons。3 stars is because of the fluff and filler material that bulks up the book。 Recommend the author rewrite the book with comprehensive clinical and race feedback A very powerful and useful insight into better training and performance for athletes。 Really clever and useful techniques for the reader and could be useful for everyone。 I've already noticed a few people around the office who exhibit deep sighs and other upper chest breathing symptoms。 This will go on my favorites list for those reasons。3 stars is because of the fluff and filler material that bulks up the book。 Recommend the author rewrite the book with comprehensive clinical and race feedback and remove the fluff。 。。。more

Generally great and contains a lot of important and valuable information。 It is just really badly written。 Way too much repetition。 With much better writing it could be truly awesome experience。 Regardless, I will keep practising these exercises and using this knowledge

If you do what he asks you to do, you get results and for me they came pretty quickly。 The whole method seemed a little counter intuitive at first but now I get it and I’m all in。 I’ve already raised my BOLT score by 10 seconds。 If your looking to improve cardiovascular health and fitness, this is the way。

Many easy to do exercisesI like that McKeown provided exercises for many different groups of people and exercises as a person moves from one stage to the next。 These exercises don't require special equipment but do require the desire and discipline to do them。 I started some of the suggestions in the book and have had positive experiences。 Since this book is intended for a wide audience, there is probably something for most people。 With that said, there is also material that is irrelevant to som Many easy to do exercisesI like that McKeown provided exercises for many different groups of people and exercises as a person moves from one stage to the next。 These exercises don't require special equipment but do require the desire and discipline to do them。 I started some of the suggestions in the book and have had positive experiences。 Since this book is intended for a wide audience, there is probably something for most people。 With that said, there is also material that is irrelevant to some people。 Thank you。 。。。more

They should teach this in school, perhaps Physical Education class or Biology class。 It's interesting how some of the scientific facts are counterintuitive to what we've 'learned' such as breathing from belly rather than chest or how the formation of our face has a lot to do with how we breathe。 They should teach this in school, perhaps Physical Education class or Biology class。 It's interesting how some of the scientific facts are counterintuitive to what we've 'learned' such as breathing from belly rather than chest or how the formation of our face has a lot to do with how we breathe。 。。。more

Amazing book about the importance of proper breathing with actionable advice on how to improve it。 One only needs to look at how long we can do without something to determine the relative importance for ones health: air > shelter > sleep > water > food。 The way we breath actually has many health implications, but this is often overlooked。 One hint to improve your breathing: mouths are made for eating, not breathing! Correct breathing is done through the nose as this avoids breathing too much, which paradoxically leads to a decrease in the oxygenation of the brain and body。 Based on the convincing facts in the book I started to tape my mouth shut when I sleep and I started to practice exclusively breathing through my nose during my runs。 I cannot imagine a better tribute to the quality of the advice in this book ;) 。。。more

Such an important book; everybody should know this information!

Very enlightened, learned so much about how we breathe and how it can be improved。 Started reading about breathing because i suffer from severe anxiety, I was told to look in to breathing excersizes by my therapist and this was a good place to start。 Completely new concept to me when he mentioned BOLT scores。 I will definitely try this to see if it works。 All in all great read, would definitely recommend this to anyone who uses their lungs daily!

Eye opening ideas about breathing。 Thanks for my WHF instructor for recommending the book。 Writing style is not the best but content is good
